INSULATION
Rationale
- 61% of domestic energy used to heat home
- Up to 35% of heat loss from house is from walls
- Up to 25% from roof
- 800kg CO2 (£150) per annum lost if loft had no insulation
- 230kg CO2 (£45) p.a. if loft had less than max insulation
Methods:
- Oxfordshire Cocoon comparison service for best deals (0800 80 48 777)
- Energy Savings Trust (EST) for grant information (0800 512 012)
- Consider using removals company to help with loft contents
- Consider employing carpenter to lift loft boards higher
Typical discounted prices for installation with Cocoon’s help, are:
- Cavity wall insulation £250
- Loft insulation £250
SOLAR PANELS FOR ELECTRICITY - Now is the time!!!
Rationale:
- Paid to generate (from Apr 2010, 41.3p / kWh, for 25yrs)
- Paid extra for electricity sold to grid, 3p per kWh
- Reduces electricity you buy (currently about 10p per kWh)
- Improve house-value (by perhaps 1/3 of installation-cost)
- Save up to 1 tonne CO2, gain £1000 p.a. (12-panels)
SOLAR HOT WATER
Rationale:
- 22% of domestic energy used to heat water
- Supplies about a third of hot water
- 260kg CO2 (£50) per year saved
