Growing food - and minds

A GROW Your Own scheme at Wallingford's Fir Tree School will not only help with pupils' healthy eating — but also with maths, biology, economics and practical skills.

But first, volunteers are needed to get the 2,500 sq ft vegetable garden ready for the planting season.

The ground was broken up by working parties at the school during January, but a redoubled effort is needed on Saturday, March 25, to get it ready for sowing after preparatory work last Saturday.

The vegetable garden is a joint venture with Green group Sustainable Wallingford.

For the group, Sam Settle said: "The aim is to provide a dynamic setting in which students can learn biology, economics, maths and practical physical skills.
"The garden will complement the excellent recent work by the school and catering staff to improve the nutritional value of school dinners. All its produce will go to the kitchen for immediate fresh use."
The working parties — pupils as well as adults — will get to work at the school between 9am and 4pm on March 25, 2006.
