Introduction

Schools are a central part of any community and the children or young people within them are the decision makers of the future. We believe it is important that they understand the imperatives of sustainability from an early age and feel empowered and excited about the possibilities for a sustainable lifestyle. The issue of sustainability is increasingly being embedded in the school curriculum, however there is much more that could and should be done, so the next generation understand the importance of addressing the challenges sustainability presents.

Sustainable Wallingford has been working with local schools since 2003 engaging and inspiring children, young people and adults through exploring issues such as recycling, local food and fair trade.

We aim to:

  • provide information and support for schools on sustainability issues
  • introduce locally sourced food to school dinner menus
  • encourage energy efficiency and the ‘3Rs’ within the schools – reduce, reuse, recycle
  • support ‘Better Ways to School’ campaigns, to encourage more walking and cycling and less driving
  • support schools working for the national accreditation scheme, Eco-Schools.
