Transport

Our transport action group is the successor to the Town Council's Integrated Transport Strategy working group, on which we used to have a representative alongside councillors, parish transport reps, police, local bus operator, school governors and others.

In 2007 the group became a SusWal action group, but still includes town councillors, school interests and the Wallingford parish transport rep. County Council public transport and cycling officers and the rural transport adviser from the Oxfordshire Rural Communities Council have attended meetings.

The group has lobbied (sometimes successfully) for lower speed limits, pedestrian crossings, cycle paths, cycle parking, bus improvements, voluntary transport and pedestrianisation. We support efforts to improve the town and surroundings for all by promoting better cycling and walking facilities, public transport and community transport options.

If you are interested in sustainable transport initiatives and would be keen to help with this group we would love to hear from you. Just contact us. There is a lot to do and we are sure with our growing reputation we can work positively with others and help to gain support for initiatives in this area.

Here are a few simple tips on transport:

  • Walk, cycle or use public transport (Wallingford has great bus links with Thames Travel or by train from Cholsey or Didcot) rather than a car whenever possible - it's good for the environment and healthier for you!
  • When buying a new car, make fuel efficiency your first consideration. The Environmental Transport Association  (ETA) on 01932 828882 can offer advice on the relative environmental merits of most cars, as can the Vehicle Certification Agency, 0117 951 5151
  • Consider switching your car to LPG – not only is it the cleanest fossil fuel but it has very low rates of fuel tax, the government is subsiding the installation of LPG and (especially relevant for Wallingford) LPG cars are exempt from the London Congestion Charge!
  • When you have to drive, try to share a car when possible - see Liftshare to find others making the same or similar journeys.
