Waste
How can you help?
1. Get involved in the group
To get involved, contact Mark Palmer on 01491 839 230.
2. Make simple changes
Much of what you throw away could be recycled or reused, or better still
need not have become waste in the first place. We give little thought to where
our rubbish goes, but we all have a responsibility to do our bit, and simple
choices can actually make a real difference..
Remember: Reduce - Reuse – Recycle
Reduce
- Buy goods which don’t have excessive packaging. Buying one large container
rather than lots of little ones uses less packaging and is usually cheaper.
- Buy refills where possible
- Call the junk mail hotline 01865 816070 – 500,000 tonnes of junk mail
is generated every year in the UK
- Use washable nappies and save up to £600. (We offer a free 7 day trial
of washable nappies - contact Sally Eccleston on 01491 834780 or
contact
us.)

- South Oxfordshire residents can buy a composter for only £19 (which
includes £5 for delivery - click
here for details. For information about South Oxfordshire District Council's
garden waste collection scheme click

- Think before you buy: where possible, try not to buy things which are
likely to become unwanted after a short while.
Reuse
- Take shopping bags to the supermarket
- Repair clothes and other goods rather than throwing them away
- Take old clothes and bric-à-brac to the charity shop (or to our next
Swap Shop!)
- Reuse envelopes and use scrap paper for notes and shopping lists
- Find a good home for unwanted items, or get hold of something you need,
using a service such as Freecycle
Recycle
- See
SODC recycling
for local facilities. There is even a video, CD etc recycling facility
in Goldsmith's Lane car park
- Use your green bin to its full capacity. In South Oxfordshire use it
to recycle plastics, cardboard, paper, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars,
drink cartons (Tetrapaks) and aluminium foil.
- Make good use of your food waste bin -- all food items that you cannot
compost yourself can be put in this.
- Take larger goods to the Waste Recycling Centres.
- Buy products made from recycled materials. It’s just as cheap to buy
recycled toilet paper and if you’ve not tried it for a while you may well
be surprised at its similarity to other brands.
